December Press Release calendar

Snow is falling in the mountains, the lights are sparkling across the valley, and winter is definitely here. We have some fun events coming up, whether you’re out and about shopping and need an extra kick, or even if you just want to know more about the 2nd most traded commodity in the world – you guessed it, Coffee! We have 2 Free Coffee Cuppings this month, and will be hosting a Coffee kick off party the 1st week of January. Our brand new menu at City North has been getting rave reviews, including our Market Crepes on Saturday & Sunday. There is no easy place for crepes in the north Scottsdale area, which is an oversight we definitely wanted to amend.
Coffee Cuppings are a great, informal way to learn more, and give some coffees a try you may have never thought to previously. If you find yourself growing tired of your drive through, super sweet, adulterated espresso machination, this might be a great option for you to sample some delicious coffees without breaking the bank – it’s free! What is often forgotten about coffee is that it is an agricultural product; which means from year to year, flavor profiles change, and some coffee’s are only available in small quantities. Our El Salvador Majahual is a perfect example; once we roast what we have, that’s it until next year.
The newest addition to our line of Coffees, and the one we will be celebrating on January 5th, is an Ethiopia Gera Jimma. Unique in a number of ways, this coffee is a part of a new coop system finding grass roots support in Ethiopia. One in which a 3rd party advisor from a recognized NGO, works with the coop to manage its debt and re-invest in the right ways to help the mill and ensure the even distribution of profit to the farmers. Better oversight is what it boils down to, and that is something we are proud to support. We go out of our way to ensure we are purchasing not only sustainable coffee, but coffee that is traded and handled fairly. A tall order, but one we take to heart, for our community, that’s you, and their communities, which are just as vital.
Looking for a great last minute gift? Our shelves will be loaded with retail coffee this holiday season, including our holiday Festivus Blend. Remember, we’re closed Christmas day, so if you’ll need your morning fix, plan ahead and stock up on beans early.
Thank you, Best Wishes & Happy Holidays! look for our next newsletter January 1st

Festivus Blend Highlight

Our Festivus Blend is a combination of our Sumatra Mandheling and Ethiopia Harrar. It is a full bodied coffee, with cocoa & red fruit undertones, and a surprising amount of complexity. We've played with this match before, and it is one we will likely revisit for years to come. Always delightful, it appeases even the pickiest pallette. Know someone who uses "pods" or other single cup brewers?
Reccomend they come into one of our cuppings, so they can learn how to make a great single cup of fresh coffee at less than 1/2 the cost and twice the ease, utilizing a V-60. These can be purchased for as little as $5. That's right, great coffee for the rest of your life for less than $5, that's what I'd call a great deal, with absolutely no experience neccessary.

Ethiopia
Gera Jimma

This Coffee originates across Goma Woreda in the Gera region of Ethiopia. It is grown between 1900-2100 meters (6200-6800ft), and is wet processed. The way in which Coffee is processed from the cherry to the bean, can drastically affect its flavor profile, and this coffee is no exception. Coffee in Ethiopia is traditionally dry-processed, this is also known as the "natural" method, where the entire cherry is left in the sun to dry before the outer layers are removed (hulling); it can result in very fruit and berry forward coffees. The Gera Jimma is a wet process, meaning the cherry is hulled, and the coffee is washed prior to being dried.
What is left is a unique, and delicious Ethiopia that is not what you would expect. The cup has very refined flavor characteristics, not a "big" coffee, but a restrained and articulate one. With an aroma of apricots, honey and flowers, the taste does not let you down. Light berry, peach essence, caramelized sugars and sweet grain dominate the flavor profile, leaving a nice clean, crisp taste in your mouth. Wet processing if not monitored can be a drain on natural resources depending on the area, and their access to water, but if Ethiopia can continue to produce this tasty of a wet process in an environmentally forward way, I would be ecstatic to see more. Come to the Coffee Kick off on the 5th to get your 1st taste, and to celebrate the coffees of Ethiopia!

Urban Cookie Strikes Again!

Only here for the holiday season, these sugar dusted peppermint-cocoa cookies are deleciously crafted. It takes skill to craft pastries the way these guys do, and we are thrilled they are in our city.
This local artisan pastry has been taking the culinary world by storm, first winning cupcake wars and a then a spotlight feature in Bon Appetit. Try one of their treats today, and see what the fuss is about, so you can be the 1st to tell your friends.

Natural Cider

Introducing our Brand Drink for Fall, Apple Cider. This all natural blend of apples and delectable spices makes for a great treat at the end of any day. Remniscent of the changing leaves, sitting by the fireplace and great conversations, this unique cider definately hits the spot.
Add Carmel for a sweeter style, or keep it simple and ol' fashioned, just like I used to drink when we would go to the Tree Farms for the holidays. Enjoy!

Coffee Spotlight

El Salvador has a unique reputation in the world of coffee; prior to 8 or 9 years ago, it was not a consistent high quality producer. This was mainly from it's socio-political issues, which not only severely limited exports, but also slowed community development and support for independent Farmers. Talk about El Salvador Coffee today? The story is completely different.

More and more small scale, and micro-lot farmers are emerging into the marketplace, with some fantastic examples of the Bourbon and Pacamara cultivars. The El Salvador Majahual we will be introducing is a great example of a classic, 'Old World' Bourbon. On the nose you'll find malted milk, praline and cocoa, the flavor is well rounded with a thick body, hints of cocoa, roasted almonds and a hint of red apple sweetness. This is a delicious coffee, and makes me excited for the next 10 years of El Salvador coffees and what we will see emerging from this country.
